Local ANC leaders say the party's national vision will trickle down to Makana residents. Speaking to Grocott's Mail on Thursday 16 January, ANC sub-regional chairman Mncedisi Boma said the theme for the launch of the manifesto was "Together we move South Africa forward."
Speaking about the strides taken by his organisation since 1994, Boma said the ANC led the journey to get rid of apartheid. He noted the billions of homes that had been built for the country's poor people and the provision of basic services such as water, electricity, stabilizing the education and health systems, as well as the providision of social grants, jobs and opportunities for people to better their lives.
He said projects such as the Mayfield Phase 2 housing project need to come with facilities like clinics, schools and halls to ensure that government does not only supply houses.
Boma also lashed out at the young people of Grahamstown for not taking advantage of the local FET college which is funded by the government.
"Government has invested so much money in FET colleges; we need to encourage our people to take this opportunity, which is not happening."
Grocott's Mail spoke to one of the delegates from the Sara Baartman region who attended the ANC gathering where the Election Manifesto was tabled by President Jacob Zuma. Thembekile Mbunge, who is a member of the ANC in Ndlambe Municipality, said he was humbled to have been one of the delegates to attend the conference.
“For me it was one of the biggest ANC gatherings that I have attended. I was also pleased by the way people were behaving, the stadium was full within minutes and people were very disciplined. The ANC made a mark that weekend, in that every race was there in numbers to listen to the Election Manifesto,” said Mbunge.
He said they had been working hard in the region to deliver services to the communities. “Now it is time for us to continue with the work we have been doing. The President said rural development is one of the priorities for the organisation. I think we will benefit as the region in those programmes,” Mbunge said.
One of the things he said they were proud of as a region, was the movement of clinics from municipal administration to the province. “It has helped our rural areas a lot; we have mobile clinics and they have equipment and clinics are running smoothly. What we will do is continue with the work we have been doing,” he said.
On 25 January the provincial leadership of the ANC will be launching the Provincial Manifesto at Mbashe Local Municipality.
