A 25-year-old man collapsed outside the Grahamstown Building Society (GBS) on Hill Street while trying to walk to hospital on Friday 13 September.
Bongani Msibi, who works for a local electrical company, said he was on his way to seek medical treatment as he was experiencing severe chest pains.
A security guard, Malibongwe Nelo, saw him drop to the pavement around 11.15am. Nelo helped him up and tried to call an ambulance.
According to Nelo, the phone operator at Settlers’ Hospital told him, “there are no public ambulances available in Grahamstown”.
After a few more calls without any luck, GBS employee Mfuzo Dyira and a colleague rushed Msibi to Settlers’ in one of their personal cars.
Minutes after Msibi was rushed off to hospital, a private ambulance showed up outside the GBS building.
On Friday around lunchtime Msibi told Grocott’s Mail that he was being treated by a nurse at the hospital, although they were unsure what had cased him to collapse.
He said he had been experiencing recurring chest pains since the end of July.
