Child Welfare Grahamstown is going to be rooting for Rhodes University hockey strikers this season, since the sports club and the organisation have been linked in an exciting all-new charity drive.
The Rhodes Hockey Club launched the initiative called Goals (Giving Others A ‘Lil Something) this year to raise funds and awareness for child welfare.
As one of the biggest sports clubs at the university, Rhodes Hockey has been frequently involved in community engagement work.
As an ongoing project members coach underprivileged children hockey, but are hoping to make a greater impact on the community with the Goals drive.
The club is looking for sponsors to affiliate themselves with Rhodes Hockey or a particular team and to donate an amount per goal scored throughout the season.
Club secretary Michelle du Toit said the main aim of the drive is to raise as much money as possible and there's ample goal-scoring and fundraising opportunity with four women’s, three men’s and one social hockey team in the club.
“Even sponsoring one rand a goal will make a difference,” she said.
The club hopes to attract individual sponsors and local businesses for once-off or per goal donations. The hockey season is already underway with matches taking place every week.
The club is planning a large ceremony in August to officially hand over all the funds raised to Child Welfare.
