Last night, the hall at the Diocesan School for Girls was alive with the sounds of rhythm and horns as the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Jazz, Siya Charles took to the stage, captivating the audience with her unique musical style. As a talented trombonist and bandleader, she delivered a performance that showcased her diverse influences and growing artistry.

The concert featured a mindfully-curated setlist, blending elements of South African jazz. Charles, who grew up in Gqeberha, now a graduate of the Juilliard School, has rapidly made a name for herself in the jazz community and this performance was a testament to her journey. Her ability to weave different musical styles together created a rich tapestry of sound that resonated with both seasoned jazz lovers and newcomers alike.

Accompanied by her skilled sextet, she led the band through a series of compositions that highlighted the collaborative spirit of jazz. The rhythm section provided a strong foundation, while the horn arrangements added layers of complexity. Each piece allowed the musicians to shine, with moments of intricate solos and tight harmonies that kept the audience engaged throughout the evening.

The atmosphere in the hall was electric, with audience members responding enthusiastically to the music. Charles’ passion for her craft was evident as she interacted with her band and the crowd, creating a warm and inviting environment. This performance not only demonstrated her technical skills, it highlighted her ability to connect emotionally with her audience.
