A little spice added to your life

Nicole Palmer set out on a quest to find the best food served during the Festival. Church Square: It is the place to be if you are a hustler. Although there aren’t many food stalls, it is certainly a place that is loved by many. The stalls have this feeling of connectivity; it feels like families in a neighbourhood where the kids play outside in the streets and everyone knows each other’s names and stories. Village Green felt like quite the opposite: a neighbourhood in the suburbs where everyone ignored each other but had all the nicest things. The ultimate question: what is the dish that makes you want to dance while you are eating this festival season?

Production manager for the play Naelstring, Anthea Mouers said “Street food! Something as simple as a hot dog. It’s fast and easy, and it’s affordable. Playwright and director for Naelstring Geralt Cloete said, “I love Sis Cindy’s food, it’s homely and it is comfortable food, but also, it’s ready prepared, it’s almost like a fast food. Vendor at Village Green Matthew Listerzz said: “I really like the food at Checkers, it’s really cheap and affordable.” Side note: he hopes Checkers doesn’t run out of soup now. Photo: Thubelihle Mathonsi

Rhodes University student Ofentse Links said: “My favourite food so far has been the chow mein, and I got it from the Dragon Pearl for R70. Jascy Leigh, also a student at Rhodes, said: “My favourite so far has been the pizza, but I’m vegetarian, so the margarita pizza from the Pizza Wagon. I think it’s R105 for the medium and R70 for the small.” Photo: Thubelihle Mathonsi

Vendor at the Wild Weird Wonderful Succulents, Hein Burger said: “My favourite place is the Dragon Pearl. They make the best sweet and sour pork, and you get it once a year at the festival. It is my favourite stall of all time.”
