Listen and Hear, a captivating production by the Department of Performing Arts at Tshwane University of Technology, shines a light on the pressing issues of poverty and social inequality through the poignant story of a young girl named Toro. Set against the backdrop of Cape Town’s Langa township, the narrative unfolds during an unprecedented snowstorm on New Year’s Eve, highlighting the stark contrasts between hope and despair.

Performed by a team of passionate educators and students, the production draws inspiration from the African Union’s Agenda 2030, emphasizing themes of social justice and the urgent need for change. The story echoes Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Match Girl,” using Toro’s tragic fate as a lens to examine the broader societal issues faced by many in Africa today. The production adeptly weaves together various artistic disciplines, including music, dance, and acting, creating a rich tapestry that engages the audience on multiple levels.

One of the most striking elements of Listen and Hear is its commitment to authenticity. The cast, composed of talented students, delivers heartfelt performances that resonate deeply, drawing viewers into Toro’s world of longing and unfulfilled dreams. The production challenges audiences to confront uncomfortable truths about poverty and the often unseen struggles of the marginalised.

As the director, Dr Rostislava  Pashkevitch-Ngobeni said, “This is a beautiful opportunity for everyone to know the story behind the show.” She further emphasised the importance of the production, saying, “Poverty is the key to violence; when there is no future, people tend to become angry.” These insights highlight the show’s aim not only to entertain but also to provoke thought and inspire action.

Listen and Hear is a thought-provoking production that successfully combines artistry with social commentary. It leaves a lasting impact, urging audiences to not only listen but also to act in support of those who continue to fight for a better future.
