As a Black man in South Africa, stand-up comic and RMR radio presenter Thumamna Sibhozo’s experiences have shaped both his comedy and his views on masculinity. “We are at the centre of a lot of good and bad in this country,” he said. “I think as South African men, there’s a lot of conversations that we need to have.”
With Emotional Black Male, Sibhozo takes humour – and his alter ego of Uncool Tea – to this conversation.
“I’m a male who’s very much in touch with his emotions, and that’s something I touch on in the show. It is not famous among men, to be emotional and to be proudly emotional.”
In Emotional Black Male, Sibhozo balances humour and vulnerability through acceptance. “When you accept something that isn’t good or makes you uncomfortable, you’re able to find things about it that you can laugh about,” he said.
“I thrive to always keep people in tune with what I’m talking about, and they won’t be getting any unexpected turns.” With his radio experience influencing his approach to stand-up, Sibhozo brings a unique perspective to the stage. “If you’re a reader, you’ll love my comedy.”
After his Festival debut, Uncool Tea heads into the Eastern Cape – and home – performing in East London, Queenstown and parts of the Wild Coast.
