In a significant development for local transport services, Makana Municipality has confirmed the acquisition of a new building for the traffic department. Spokesperson Anele Mjekula has confirmed that the municipality intends to occupy the new facility located at 2A Hill Street, Makanda by 1 June 2025, with operations expected to commence shortly thereafter.

The announcement comes after months of uncertainty surrounding the traffic department’s previous location, which had been dilapidated and needed extensive repairs. Mjekula emphasised the importance of the new site in enhancing transport services for the community.

Responding to inquiries regarding the department’s operation and staffing plans, Mjekula stated, “Yes, a building has been secured for the traffic department. The municipality will occupy the building by 1 June 2025 and prepare for opening operations. The municipality follows the municipal recruitment plan to make recruitments.”

The decision to relocate follows a prolonged effort by the municipality to find a suitable building, among ongoing issues related to the repairs needed for the old structure. The Department of Transport previously had to evaluate several potential sites before approving the new location.
