What a time to be in Makhanda! The RU120 Makhanda Community Concert next week promises luscious sounds to raise our temperature with a lineup headlined by the legendary Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse.

The concert is organised by Rhodes University’s Department of Music and Musicology in collaboration with the Makana Community Orchestra to strengthen the university’s ties with the Makhanda community while showcasing our exceptional musical talent. The concert, one of the closing events for the #RU120 celebration, is on Saturday 10 May 10 at 3pm, is at the Guy Butler Theatre.

The afternoon will feature performances by musicians in the Department of Music and Musicology, the Rhodes University Chamber Choir, the Makana Community Orchestra (comprising musicians from across the Makana District, including local institutions), and the highly anticipated headline performance by Sipho ’Hotstix’ Mabuse, a Soweto-born singer and song writer who has worked with Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Ray Phiri and Sibongile Khumalo.

Rhodes University aims to deliver a memorable experience as part of its commitment to the community, celebrating and recognising its remarkable talent. This event also seeks to foster unity, connection, and cultural appreciation.

Funds raised from ticket sales will support the university’s internal student debt fundraising efforts. For more information, visit https://www.quicket.co.za/events/313534-ru120-makhanda-community-concert/#/.
