In response to Grocott’s Mail, Makana Municipality has addressed the issues surrounding the dysfunctional and dilapidated Traffic Department building. Spokesperson Anele Mjekula confirmed that the structure is old and in dire need of repairs, which are part of the ongoing Small Town Revitalisation Project led by the Office of the Premier.

Mjekula noted that the municipality initiated a Request for Quotations (RFQ) for repairs last December. Still, the process yielded no responses, leading to a re-advertisement in March, which closed on April 1. The municipality is now actively following the Supply Chain Processes to lease a more suitable building for operations.

Despite evaluating several locations within Makanda, the Department of Transport has not yet approved the identified buildings, currently the municipality is preparing to relocate equipment and documents to the new leased facility.

“The building is not operational, and we are working diligently to resolve this issue,” Mjekula emphasised, assuring residents that the municipality recognises the inconvenience caused by this prolonged situation and is committed to finding a solution.
