Makhanda is set to ignite this week as the Graeme College Rugby Festival returns for another thrill-packed edition. From March 20 to 22, the Eastern Cape’s top rugby schools will assemble at Graeme College to showcase schoolboy rugby at its finest. It isn’t just a festival; it marks the beginning of the Eastern Cape rugby season. It promises fierce rivalries and unforgettable moments on the field. There will be 26 first teams battling it out, bringing skill and heart to the game as they fight for early-season bragging rights.

The festival has a distinguished tradition of delivering fast and intense rugby. This year, anticipation is even higher, with big tackles, striking tries and positive school spirits as rugby luminaries from across the province go head-to-head. For Graeme College, hosting this iconic festival is more than just rugby. It’s about fostering sportsmanship and celebrating the game that unites communities. It is a moment to showcase the spirit of Makhanda’s rugby culture.

With a lineup featuring powerhouses like Selborne College, Grey High, Queen’s College and St Andrews, spectators can expect heart-pounding clashes from the first whistle to the final hooter. Of course, Graeme’s 1st XV will be looking to make their mark in front of their home crowd.

Graeme College Deputy Headmaster Gregg van Molendorff captured the festival’s significance in the school newsletter: “The Graeme College Festival is always a highlight on the rugby calendar. It promises an unforgettable weekend of top-tier rugby action, camaraderie, and school spirit—don’t miss out on the excitement!”

So, if schoolboy rugby is your passion, Marais A and Somerset Field are the places to be this week. Bring your enthusiasm, back your team, and witness the rising luminaries of Eastern Cape rugby in action.

    Blow the whistle!
