Mouners came out in numbers this past weekend to bid farewell to one of Makhanda’s young and promising football talents, who sadly passed away recently.

Nomveliso “Nhenhe” Zenani was laid to rest last Saturday and all the speakers at her funeral service echoed similar sentiments about her personality.

Childhood friend and neighbour, Onesisa Ntlanjeni, described Zenani as a warm, loving person who was full of life, someone who respected people the same way, whether young or old. “She was an exceptional human being with a bright smile, she did not want to see anyone sad and would go out of her way to make sure that everyone around her is happy.”

Speaking to Grocott’s Mail at the funeral, African Connection Women’s Football Club’s executive member, Nwabisa Tyelbooi, described Zenani as a rare talent. “Nhenhe was a special player, short but with a heart of a lion. The country has been robbed of a young talented athlete who could have easily gone very far. We are really going to miss her.”

Zenani was an African Connection player.

It was a very emotional service as family, friends and team mates paid their last respects to one of the best footballers Makhanda has ever produced.

Speaking on behalf of the young woman’s family, Archbishop Mlungiseleli Koliti, spoke about the good relationship between Zenani’s two families and that they had worked together to make sure their daughter had a peaceful and respectful send-off.
