The residents of Extension 10 face a daily struggle that many of us take for granted: access to clean, reliable water.
For days, the taps in this community run dry, leaving families without the most necessities for life. This affects their ability to drink, cook, and bathe and hampers the children’s ability to attend school clean and ready to learn.
A past St Andrew’s College parent, Victoria O’Connell has purchased Hippo Rollers for the project. Hippo Roller is a social enterprise organisation based in South Africa that manufactures and distributes Hippo Rollers with the aid of sponsors and donors and they have been involved in the project for over 30 years. This means of transporting water within our local community will bring about change for the people who have no access to the water.
St Andrew’s College Community Engagement Vision for 2024/2025
Inspired by this act of kindness and determined to bring a lasting solution, we are excited to announce a new initiative for 2024/2025. In partnership with our local municipality, we aim to install 20 water tanks in the higher areas of Extension 10.
These tanks will ensure that even when municipal water is not available, it reaches every home, eliminating the days-long wait for water. “This initiative aims to provide water to communities in need, working in collaboration with Robert Shaw, Danny O’Connell, and the Community Engagement team. Access to clean water is a fundamental human right, yet the Makhanda community continues to struggle with service delivery and water scarcity. By funding this project, we not only address a critical need but also reinforce the values of empathy and service that
St Andrew’s stands for. The estimated cost a 2400L water tank, including installation, is R5,000. In addition, we would like to fund the availability of ten 90L hydro rollers, each at an estimated cost of R2,500. Therefore, R30,000 will meet the needs of one street and community, but we intend to install as many water tanks as the funds raised will allow. This gift will serve as a powerful reminder of our commitment to supporting and uplifting the less fortunate within our broader community.” – Tom Clucas, Head of School.
Together, We Can Make a Difference
This is more than a project; it’s a promise of a better future for Extension 10. Let’s unite to ensure that no one in our community has to go without water. With your help, we can install these 20 water tanks and bring a reliable water supply to where it’s needed most.
You can help to turn this vision into reality, we need your support. We are calling on individuals, businesses, and the Andrean community to join us in raising the necessary funds to bring water closer to the people of Extension 10. Every contribution, no matter how small, will make a significant difference in the lives of these residents.
