    Makhanda learners spell their way to greatness, lovely prizes at spelling contest

    More than 70 primary school learners went to battle it out at the annual Yveslight Spelling Contest
    at the Princess Alice Hall in Makhanda recently. The competition, in its third year, comprised of
    writing letters in English and isiXhosa.

    Makhanda primary schools represented by the 77 learners at the annual spelling competition were George Dickerson, Samuel Ntlebi, Ntaba Maria, Graeme College, SDA and Archie Mbolekwa.
    The judges, Rhodes University Library representatives, were Lucky Xaba and Buleli Mpokela, who also
    worked alongside Lindy–Rae Knock of George Dickerson Primary School and local businesswoman,
    Nelisa Nkomombini of Nel’s Events.

    The first prize went to Kungoyolo Teyise from Samuel Ntlebi who scooped the number one position in
    the IsiXhosa category, whilst Sibabalwe Tyala from Ntaba Maria won first place in the English
    category. Both winners received a cash prize of R100 each, chocolates and environmental info
    books.

    The top 5 in the respective categories received crossword books, stationery and certificates.
    YISL (Yveslight Insititution of Skills and Leadership – a non-profit organization appealed to the public
    to partner and support them to enable them to host more initiatives that stimulate and educate school
    learners.

    TOP 5 – ISIXHOSA: Okwanga Maganca, Someleze Qweleze, Dyama Dastire, Qaqamba Ndemka and
    Kungoyolo Teyise.
    TOP 5 – ENGLISH: Lisakhanya Nelani, Kungawo Teyise, Lindokuhle Koesnel, Didoluhle Nonxuba and
    Sibabalwe Tyala
