Makhanda’s young football sensation Olwethu “Ma Oza” Songelwa is currently training with DSTV Premier League club Cape Town City’s reserve side, hoping to secure a professional contract.

The DSTV Premiership is South Africa’s elite professional football league.

Songelwa left for Cape Town recently to express his skills at City in the hope of playing professional football and put his hometown on the map once again.

After being voted the best player of the Engen U18 tournament in Gqeberha recently, Songelwa was spotted by one of many scouts present at the tournament. He was invited for trials at Cape Town City where he is currently training with the reserve side.

Songelwa had a great season with his local side Sophia Stars in the Makana LFA and has been a consistent performer throughout the season.

Sophia Stars’ director of sport shared his views on Songelwa’s achievement. “We are very pleased as the club with what is happening and it means that we are doing something right. We take development of young boys very seriously as this is the important phase of their football careers.”

Songelwa will be in Cape Town until 28 July and the Makhanda football fraternity is praying for him to secure a professional contract with the Citizens, who have done well in the elite DSTV Premier League over the years.
