Makhanda’s top women football side and seven times regional league champions, African Connection, received a much needed boost ahead of Women’s Month.

Amakonokono, as they are affectionately known in football circles, received warm-up T-shirts from one of the top local security companies Smhart Security.

They are the hosts of the popular Diski Queens 7s tournament,  which is aimed at celebrating the achievements of women and is also an awareness campaign for GBV, women and children abuse. The tournament will be held on Women’s Day as part of the national Women’s Day celebrations.

Last year’s inaugural edition attracted a lot of teams and spectators, and this year’s edition will be no different.

Speaking to Grocott’s Mail on behalf of the sponsors, branch manager Janet Terblanche, expressed her feelings: “We are so happy to be associated with the team of African Connection’s calibre. The Diski Queens 7s is a great initiative and we feel very honoured to be part of such a great initiative. We will try our best to help African Connection wherever possible.”

Smhart security’s area manager, Andre Terblanche, encouraged the girls to keep on doing the good work they are doing and to work really hard to realise their dreams.

Accepting the sponsorship on behalf of the club, Nwabisa Tyelbooi, an executive member, told Grocott’s how grateful the club was. “We are very grateful for what Smhart Security has done for us. This shows that they really care about the community they operate in and that they are part of the community. This gesture will definitely go a long way.

“We would like to thank Smhart Security for what they have done for us and we hope that this is the beginning of a long lasting relationship between us. Our girls will be looking fabulous on Women’s Day for the Diski Queens 7s, thanks to Smhart Security.”

Amakonokono will go to this year’s edition in high spirits and will pull out all the stops to try and impress their new sponsors.
