Christmas came early for one of the legendary Tantyi-based rugby clubs.

Old Collegians were this past week the recipients of rugby boots donated by one of their former players, Sima Mthetho, who grew up in the Old Collegians’ youth ranks, which gave him a solid foundation for his game.

Mthetho donated six pairs of boots to his former club.

A product of the Tantyi club, Mthetho is currently coaching All Stars RFC in Tshwane in Gauteng.

Speaking to Grocott’s Mail, club captain Khanyisa Solomon, thanked Mthetho for this generosity. “The club is very grateful to Mr Mthetho and we really appreciate his support. We are happy that he has not forgotten his roots and he knows how bad the situation is in Makhanda due to the high rate of unemployment and this donation will really go a long way in assisting our players.”

Team coach Lungisa “Bans” Memani was also pleased with the donation. “This will make our job as coaches very easy as players will concentrate on the game instead of stressing about boots. This is very rare for people who have made it in life to remember where they come from and we thank Mthetho for giving back to his community.”

This is a true example of ubuntu and living proof of how Makhandans look out for each other.
