As the winter sports season is now in full swing, the Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) hockey sides began their season with some good showings. The DSG U16 A hockey team started the 2019 season with a bang, as they played in the Woodridge College Co-Ed U16 Hockey Festival over the weekend of 29-31 March in Thornhill.
The DSG team played five matches over the course of the festival and recorded victories in all of the matches as they put together some outstanding passages of play and showed a ruthless streak in front of goal. They they went on to score a total of 16 goals with only one conceded over the course of the weekend.
Coach David Wright was pleased with his charges and went on to say, “while we played well, we still have much to work on, and some of the score-lines probably flattered us, especially against Woodridge where our keeper, Zaza Swift was outstanding. That said we are scoring goals which is always a good position to be in and hopefully we can take this form into this coming weekend’s school derby game against Collegiate.”
In other DSG sports news, the DSG Second hockey team attended the Oakhill Hockey Festival in Knysna over the weekend where they played against First teams from around the country and had some outstanding results. While only winning one of their five matches played, they did secure 2 draws, with only 2 losses.
