Graeme hockey draw to Alexander Road

Graeme College enjoyed a relatively relaxed weekend of sport, with many of their teams receiving a bye over the past weekend. Despite this, the Graeme junior hockey side took on Oatlands, while the senior hockey teams travelled to Port Elizabeth to take on Alexander Road. A number of Graeme’s rugby teams also joined Port Alfred in their birthday celebrations.

The junior hockey team had a great game and managed to beat Oatlands 3-0 on Friday 3 August. Graeme’s U15 A side struggled against an impressive Alexander Road team, and went down 5-0. The First team had to match the Alex intensity in the opening exchanges but then found a good rhythm. Alex deserved to score at the end of the first half, and were justifiably 1-0 up at the break.

As per usual, the Graeme side came out with a much better second half performance and turned the game on its head. They dominated the best chances from there, although Alex always looked dangerous on attack. Graeme scored early in the half with a sublime and clinical finish by Jeremy Beyleveld. The game itself was on a knife-edge with either team able to clinch victory. Graeme thought they had done enough to win it when Lubabalo Mbenga scored with three minutes to go. Unfortunately for the visitors, one of the umpires thought he had seen an infringement, and after a discussion, the goal was disallowed. Graeme then clicked into another gear and almost scored twice more in the final few exchanges. In the end, neither team managed to pull ahead, and the final score of 1-1 was not a bad reflection of the contest.

Saturday 4 August saw a number of Graeme rugby sides travel to Port Alfred to celebrate their birthday with a number of tightly contested matches. There were mixed results which included some great fixtures. The Graeme U11 A side won 31-0 while the U15 A side romped home 44-0 victors. The Graeme Thirds had a great game which ended in a 8-8 draw with the Port Alfred Seconds. If not more entertaining, the Graeme Second team who took on the Port Alfred First team created a superb spectator exhibition. The Port Alfred Firsts eventually scraped a dramatic last gasp victory, winning 33-32.
