This morning Sunday 26 November a 29-year-old man handed himself over to the Joza police, after the death of his girlfriend. He faces a charge of murder.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said it was alleged that the man returned to his home in the early hours of this morning after an alleged altercation with his 20-year-old girlfriend during which he allegedly assaulted her with a chair.

“He left her lying on the floor and went to bed,” Govender said. “This morning when he awoke he found her dead. She had severe upper body wounds.”

The victim could not be identified at this stage, as investigators were attempting to locate her next of kin, Govender said.  The suspect would appear in the Magistrate’s Court in Grahamstown later this week.
