Thee people drowned on New Year’s Day, in Port Alfred and in Kasouga.

The body Masixole Gadavana, 30, of Cape Town, was found washed ashore on East Beach, Port Alfred, around 6pm on Sunday 1 January 2017, South African Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said.

Emergency services responded but could not save him, Govender said. He had been in the company of friends, she said.

“An inquest docket has been opened for investigation,” Govender said.

Earlier on New Year's Day at West Beach, Mziyanda Nyamezela, 29, from Lloyd Location in Alice, died on the scene and another person was taken to a local hospital, according to Govender.

Unsuccessful attempts were made to resuscitate Sthembiso Kondile, 65, of Motherwell NU6, around1.30pm on 1 January at Kasouga.
