A half-naked man was arrested by the Port Alfred police after he was found to be in possession of a phone for which he didn't know the password.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said it was around 4am on Sunday 1 January on the West Beach Road that a police officer on patrol noticed the man.

"The member stopped and asked the male to get dressed," Govender said. "As he was doing so, the police officer noticed that he had  a cellphone with him.

"She asked for the phone, which he handed over. When the police officer asked him to enter the password, he was unable to.

"It was an IPhone valued at R12 000.  He was arrested for possession of suspected stolen property," said Govender.

In another incident, six people were arrested in Port Alfred on 30 December for being in possession of fireworks without a permit.

Govender said they were arrested in terms of the Act Regulating Explosives. They were each handed a fine of R1500.
