Two Nigerian nationals who were arrested for being in possession of cocaine worth R630 000 will appear in the Grahamstown Magistrate's court on Tuesday 20 December.

Two Nigerian nationals who were arrested for being in possession of cocaine worth R630 000 will appear in the Grahamstown Magistrate's court on Tuesday 20 December.

The men, aged 36 and 42, were arrested for possession of around 1.8kg cocaine on Thursday, 1 December on the N2 just outside Grahamstown.

On Monday 12 December they appeared in the magistrate's court for a formal bail application, but due to the absence of the investigating officer the case was postponed to next week Tuesday.

State Prosecutor Nevadia Adriaan told Grocott's Mail that the state will oppose the bail application of the two men.

"The investigating officer was not available so their bail application was postponed. Yes they want to apply for bail but the state is strongly opposing that. They tried to bribe the arresting officers during their arrest so this is very serious," said Adriaan.

The men are facing two charges, one for possession of drugs and another for attempting to bribe an officer of the law.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Khaya Tonjeni said that the two suspects tried to bribe the officials by offering them a sum of R12 000 that was hidden in a shoe in the back-seat of their vehicle during their arrest.
