Verries United netball team earned a hat-trick of titles as they were once again crowned champions of the Fabian Juries Community Fun Day, for the third year in a row. The fun day was hosted by Grahamstown Brumbies Rugby Club at the Oval on Saturday.

Cellotape were crowned the rugby 10s Champions for the first time after four attempts.

The prestigious event saw thousands of spectators and players attending on a perfect spring day. As one of the biggest events of the year, supporters and players travelled from across the Eastern Cape to witness some excellent rugby and netball on display.

There was also an abundance of talent on show and exciting individual tries being scored. Verries United once again showed their consistency and dominance in the netball event and beat Cellotape 13-4 in the final.

They proved too strong for the young Scotchfarm side and walked away with the title. Sherniqa Fillis from Verries was chosen as the Player of the Day/Tournament for her overall consistent performance. Tantyi Rangers finished third.

In the rugby event, there was more competitiveness among the eight teams. Cellotape, who were unbeaten on the day, were deserved winners after their consistent performances throughout the day. They comprehensively beaten Ghost Town United 24-10 in the highly anticipated final.

Brian Buys, Vuyo Sigingqi and Fish Kongwana scored tries for the winning team, while Joe Mqubuli scored a brace of tries for Ghost Town. Fabian Juries who played for Cellotape, created many tries for his side and was dangerous with ball in hand on attack.

He was also voted Player of the Tournament/Day. Glenwill Lewis of Currie Park Rebels earned the Top Try Scorer (5) as well as the Top Points Scorer (25) awards.

Currie Park Rebels claimed third place after beating Verries United 12-0 in the 3rd/4th play offs. Cellotape beat Verries 24-7 in the first semi-final and Ghost Town beat Currie Park 7-0 in the other semi-final.

Monde Tabata the SARU Administrator at EPRU, was present at the event as one of the special guests. He was full of praise for the Brumbies in staging such a big and successful event: “I have never seen such atmosphere at a local event, it is more like a provincial event.

It is just an amazing experience and heads off to the LOC of the club that managed to bring the community closer together. The amount of effort that has been put in to showcase this is totally commitment and unbelievable. This event can only grow from strength to strength. Well done Brumbies.”

Cello Tape Rugby and Verries netball each won a cash prize as champions of the Fabian Juries Community Fun day. These cash prizes will be donated to community organisations of their choice. This is what this community day is all about: Building a caring Grahamstown community.

Verries United’s beneficiary is Dina Soup Kitchen in Vergenoeg and Cellotape’s is St Mary’s DCC. Doctor Davies Optometrists donated

R5 000 to the Mckaizer Old Age Home and will also provide spectacles (if needed) for all the 21 elderly people at the Home.
The winners and runners-up of the rugby event, Cellotape and Ghost Town, will play against Queenstown’s 10s winners and runners up next year in February.
