Grahamstown Brumbies rugby club hosted an athletics fun day at the Oval on Saturday.

Grahamstown Brumbies rugby club hosted an athletics fun day at the Oval on Saturday.

Overall winners were Verries United who finished with a total of 57 points from all the events.

They were followed by Currie Park Rebels (45 points) in second and Tantyi Rangers (43) third.

According to one of the event organisers, Chesley Daniels, one of the highlights of the day, “surely was the Open 100m race for men when Marlon Vibes Daniels was leading the highly star-studded race, and with 10m to go, pulled an unfortunate hamstring that robbed him of a certain victory”. Earl Elbrugh went on to win the race in a time of 10.98 seconds.

Many residents took part in the event, with a number of events held for the rugby players, including Front Rankers vs Front Rankers, Locks vs Locks, Looseforwards vs Looseforwards, Scrumhalves vs Scrumhalves, Flyhalves vs Flyhalves, Centres vs Centres, Wings vs Wings, Fullbacks vs Fullbacks, Coaches vs Coaches, Managers vs Managers, Executive vs Executive, Referees vs Referees.
The event catered for age groups U3 up to Over 40s.

Areas taking part included Currie Park Rebels, Ghost Town United, Cellotape, Verries United, Hooggenoeg White Bulls, Tantyi Rangers, Fingo.

Athletics Fun Day results:
1. Verries United – 57 points
2. Currie Park Rebels – 45
3. Tantyi Rangers – 43
4. Hoogenoeg – 39
5. Cellotape – 34
6. Ghost Town United – 26

“Brumbies Family thanks all participants, the broader community and members for the wonderful support today. It was a big success with lots of fun, some brilliant individual performances, abundance of talent on show and a lot of surprises on the day, said Daniels.
