A man was arrested with abalone worth R20 000 this afternoon Friday 28 October, thanks to an alert Port Alfred police officer.

The officer and a civilian employee were returning to the station around 12.30pm, police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said.

“They were travelling on the R72 and as they approached the hiking spot they noticed a male with a large sports bag standing there being picked up by a truck travelling in the direction of East London,” Govender said.

She returned to the station, dropped off the civilian employee and was joined by another two police officers. They drove on to the R72 and caught up with the truck and stopped it.

They searched  the bag and found 97 abalone to the value of approximately R 20 000, Govender said. The suspect, aged 30, faces a charge of possession of abalone and will appear in the Peddie Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
