The Rhodes University Rifle Club recently participated in the South African Target Rifle Association's Free State Championships in Bloemfontein.

The Rhodes team consisted of Mart-Mari de Bruyn (B-Class), Graeme Schmeldt, Karen Bradshaw, James Connan, Mike Robertshaw, Cara Trivella, Shayna Asherwood (C-Class) and Geoff Bagshawe-Smith (F-Class).

The team had an excellent outing with some stand-out results.

The weekend though, belonged to Schemldt who took silver in match one and bronze in match two. This was good enough to secure him the overall silver medal in the C-Class and caps off an excellent year for him.

Fellow Grahamstown athlete, Gerrit Vlok from the PJ Olivier club, won the gold medal in match two of the F-Class competition.

Among the juniors, Robertshaw took the overall bronze medal. Bradshaw, Connan, Robertshaw, Trivella and Asherwood all set new personal best scores and De Bruyn and Bagshawe-Smith narrowly missed out on medals in their respective classes.

This year Schmeldt participated in two provincial Championships and the Satra National Championships. He won four gold, two silver and three bronze medals in the nine matches that were shot at these events.

He also won the overall C-Class gold medal at the Satra Nationals and the overall C-Class gold medal at the Eastern Province Championships to add to the overall C-Class Silver medal at the Free State Championships.
