The Department of Water and Sanitation in partnership with the Eastern Cape Provincial Department of Education and various municipalities will embark on hand-washing education drive to celebrate Global Hand Washing Day which is being held from 11-18 October.

A number of activities will be held in various schools around the province to inculcate a culture of washing hands with soap.

This annual commemoration will be held under a theme: Make Hand-washing a Habit.

The purpose of Global Hand Washing Day is to create awareness about the importance of hand-washing with soap to prevent diseases and to save lives.

According to a research by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, if everyone routinely washed their hands, a million deaths a year could be prevented.

It is also estimated that washing hands with soap and water could reduce diarrhoea disease-associated deaths by up to 50 percent.
