Grahamstown police have opened an inquest docket as well as two attempted murder cases following a fatal shooting in Dickerson Street on Saturday 24 September.

Grahamstown Police Spokesperson Captain Luvuyo Mjekula said it was alleged that a 35-year-old man had been involved in an altercation with a woman believed to be his ex-girlfriend when he pulled out a hand-made gun and fired a shot at the woman's neighbour.

The shot missed and the man fired another shot, this time at his ex-girlfriend, but missed again, Mjekula said.

"The woman managed to escape while the man tried to reload his firearm.

At a later stage a gunshot from the house was heard and on entering police discovered the man on the floor with a bullet wound to his head," Mjekula said.

"A bloodied knife was also found close to the body. Investigations are ongoing."
