With St Andrew’s College basketball team only having two weeks of training this was definitely not to their detriment as they took on the Makana Spears and won with a final score of 37-29.
St Andrew’s were almost able to maintain a lead throughout the game with a breakaway at the end in the final quarter.
The first quarter was fast-paced and intense as St Andrew’s fought hard to create a lead by four goals, leaving the score at the end of the first quarter at 13-9.
Throughout the second quarter St Andrew’s were able to maintain their four-point lead leaving the score at 19-15.
Makana Spears picked up their defensive techniques making use of area defending and man-on-man marking which pushed them into a 23-23 draw.
The fourth quarter was the make-or-break and both teams increased the playing speed and man-on-man defending; the end of the fourth quarter saw a score of 37-29 to St Andrew’s. It was a well-played game from both teams and a well-deserved win for St Andrew’s.
Makana Spear captain Bongolwethu Setani said at the end of the game that the team had “played its best” and said that “we are learning from this and that at the end of the day it is either you lose, win or draw”.
The St Andrew’s captain Tanaka Chuma was happy with the outcome and the final score adding that the Makana Spears were good opponents as they were “able to find a way through our press-up defence”.
This game was played in preparation for the Kearsney College Independent School tournament that St Andrew’s will be taking part in from 30 September to 4 October.
St Andrew’s coach Arnold Mlandeli is gearing the team towards the tournament and is increasing their confidence levels as well as their fitness levels.
Mlandeli explains that the training will consist of “individual skills, team chemistry and set plays with matches against Rhodes 1st basketball team as practice”.
With an intense schedule of training three to four times a week expected to increase the St Andrew’s team looks to be a strong side entering the Kearsney College Independent School tournament.
