The Director of the Raphael Centre, Mary Humphreys has been awarded a highly competitive scholarship to participate in the Global Change Leaders Programme in Canada.

The post-graduate leadership course, offered by the COADY Institute housed at St Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, will run for seven weeks from August to October.

Twenty women representing 19 countries from around the world will participate. Women selected come from a range of countries including Cameroon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Tanzania, Uganda, Sudan, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, India, Nepal, Mongolia, Cambodia, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago. Humphreys is the only participant to be selected from South Africa.

The course will explore theories around leadership, building resilient communities and accountable democracies. The final module will include the development of a plan for each participant to implement on their return home.

“I am thrilled to have this opportunity to represent both the Raphael Centre and South Africa at this international leadership course,” said Humphreys.

She added that she was excited to learn new skills and explore ideas that could contribute to the growth of the centre.

For more information on COADY’s Global Change Leadership Programme, contact the centre on 046 622 8831 or email

The Raphael Centre, a civil society organisation, was established in 1999 to provide support services to people living with HIV. More recently, the centre’s mandate has broadened to incorporate health and wellness services for both HIV positive and negative people.

They work within a values-based framework and all work is governed by development principles.
