A Ford Ikon driver died on the scene after his vehicle collided with a truck on the N2 near the Settlers Monument on Thursday4 August.

An eyewitness who was in the truck said the accident occurred after the motor vehicle driver failed to stop at an intersection at Lucas Avenue and the truck driver desperately tried and failed to swerve away from the vehicle.

The truck allegedly hit the right-hand side of the car of the deceased who was an elderly man.

Correctional Services Officer Conrad Jacobs said the paramedics and the police officers came a “bit too late to save the driver”.

Jacobs stated that it “took over 10 minutes” for medical help to arrive on the scene.

Some eyewitnesses and the people who were on the truck which was involved in the accident expressed shock and sadness over what happened.

The paramedics took the dead man out of the car and they covered his body with a blanket until the coroners arrived to fetch him.

Grahamstown police spokesperson Captain Luvuyo Mjekula confirmed the accident and the death.

He said police have opened a culpable homicide case against the truck driver.
