A 27-year-old man has been arrested on charges of assault and robbery with intention to do grievous bodily harm following a stabbing on the corner of High Street and Somerset Street at the weekend.

Grahamstown Police Spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said a visitor from East London was walking in the area on Saturday night, 9 July when a man approached him and robbed him at knife point.

According to another source, the man was in the company of his female partner when he was robbed.

"The complainant overpowered the robber, though," Govender said. "And a handbag full of belongings was recovered."

Govender said the man was treated and discharged from hospital.

"The man was from out of town," Govender said. "And he was in the Festival precinct so it is possible he was a Festival visitor."
