Three men driving a bakkie were found and arrested with a load of slaughtered sheep on the N2 just outside Grahamstown on the night of Saturday 2 July.
Grahamstown police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said it was approximately 9pm when the men were arrested by Grahamstown Highway Patrol members.
She said the police were conducting their vehicle checkpoint when they stopped the bakkie which was travelling towards Port Elizabeth.
"The members tried to stop and search the bakkie. Two male occupants who were at the back jumped off and ran into the bushes.
"The driver tried to flee but was unsuccessful. The other two passengers who were in front also tried to escape but could not get out as the vehicle was close to the railings.
"During an inspection of the vehicle they discovered 18 sheep and all had been slaughtered. The total approximate value of the sheep is R 27 000," said Govender.
She said the sheep belonged to a Bedford farmer. The three suspects arrested are aged between 40 and 47 and are facing charges of possession of suspected stolen livestock.
Govender said detectives from the stock theft unit will continue with the investigation. The suspects were due to appear in the Grahamstown Magistrate's Court.
