Makana municipality's Executive Mayor, Nomhle Gaga, welcomed Springbok coach Allister "Toetie" Coetzee to Grahamstown, his town of birth, with a rousing speech on Tuesday morning.

Speaking at City Hall, Gaga said: "Like so many of us, you were born and raised here. This is your home."

Gaga also hailed Coetzee for rising to the top despite growing up in a divided apartheid town.

She said that she hoped his trip down memory lane would boost his morale.

Grocott's Mail will be following Coetzee throughout his trip around his hometown today.
