It was with tangible excitement that almost 60 representatives of various community groups gathered at the official opening of the Heart Matters Pregnancy Care Centre at 4 Howse Street on 24 May.

Makana Executive Mayor Nomhle Gaga, who cut the symbolic ribbon in front of Heart Matters red door was delighted at the overwhelming support the centre received.

Gaga, a former professional nurse was clearly impressed with the work being done by the committee and volunteers of Heart Matters.
The Pregnancy Care Centre is affiliated to a national organisation, Africa Cares, which provides Heart Matters with training, materials, information and updates from Heart Beat International in America, where the organisation originated.

“The centre is here to provide a safe and confidential place for women and families of any age, religion and culture, cope with an unplanned pregnancy.

“We are here to help them consider their options in a supportive and compassionate environment, always respecting that the woman's choice is her own”, said centre director Marion Penney.

The centre offers free services which include pregnancy testing; confidential counselling; and sharing the truth around their options of adoption, parenting and abortion.

Heart Matters will very soon be offering post-abortion counselling.
