An undisclosed amount of money, two laptops, cellphones and a suspected hired vehicle were recovered by the Port Alfred police after robbery of a bakery there on Tuesday.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekula said five men were arrested just hours after the robbery occurred.
He said the suspects are in their mid-20s and early 30s. They are believed to be from Port Elizabeth and are currently in detention in  Port Alfred.

Mjekula said Detective Commander Lieutenant Colonel Ncamisa Donkrag and her team had received a report of a business robbery at about 1:12pm.

The team reacted quickly and headed for the bakery in Station Hill Township.

"According to the owner, one man had entered the bakery, bought a loaf of bread and left. A few minutes later he entered with three other men and, armed with firearms, demanded money," said Mjekula.

Donkrag said after opening the safe they tied up the people in the business and fled with other valuables in a vehicle that had been idling outside.

"Shortly after the robbery, police received information that the men had been seen in the nearby Nemato Township. Police got back-up from Nemato police and went on a hunt for the suspects,” said Donkrag.

She said police found the men in a house in the township and arrested them. Donkrag said it was great work from the members, the response was very quick.

The five are due to appear in the Port Alfred Magistrate’s Court this week.
