Therapy SMART will host their annual Onesie Run/walk in aid of Autism South Africa tomorrow (Wedesday 16 March).

The event starts from Kingswood College Dold Field at 5.30pm and participants are encouraged to dress up in a onesie, pj’s or something blue. The entry fee is R10.

Ruwayda Jackson, office administrator at Therapy S.M.A.R.T said the inaugural event last year was “such a great success that we decided to make it an annual event".

It's being held to raise awareness for those living with autism spectrum disorder and their families.

“This is a fun event for the whole family where you can dress up in pyjamas, your favourite onesie or anything blue and raise money for a great cause,” said Jackson.

All proceeds from the R10 entrance fee – and any further donations – will go to Autism South Africa, an organisation which supports families affected by autism and raises awareness of the condition.

Autism is broadly defined as a difficulty communicating, forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts.

The condition varies hugely in degree – from mild social difficulties to a complete inability to communicate in any form. For that reason it is seen as a spectrum rather than one single condition.

World Autism Awareness Week 2016 runs from 2 to 8 April and this year’s theme is “Light it up in Blue”.

In 2015 more than 8400 iconic buildings and land marks over 101 countries on 7 continents – including our own Settlers Monument – turned their lights blue to raise autism awareness.

“To show our support at Therapy S.M.A.R.T we will 'light it up in blue' in our workplace, by wrapping our roof in blue light bulbs,” said Jackson.
