The body of a 36-year-old man found on the N2 near Coombs recently has been identified as Simphiwe Faltein Mhlontlo, of Tshoxa Location in Keiskammahoek.
Grahamstown police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said the man was working in Plettenberg Bay and was travelling home when he was fatally wounded.
Police had appealed to the community to come forward and identify the man's body. Govender said the victim was found on the N2 near Coombs in the early hours of Saturday 27 February.
According to information received by the police, the victim was earlier dropped off at the roadworks stop and go by an unknown vehicle.
Govender said the victim, who was drunk, had told a worker at the stop and go he was on his way home to Polokwane.
He proceeded on foot in the direction of Peddie. A short while later a motorist travelling from Peddie towards Grahamstown stopped and informed the worker of a man's body lying in the road.
Govender said the worker confirmed it was the same person he had met earlier.
Govender thanked the media and the public for their assistance in identifying the victim.
His family confirmed his identity late last week.
