In a freak accident early on Thursday 11 February, a luggage trailer odetached from a national passenger bus transporting returning Rhodes University students and rolled back, colliding with the car behind it.

The accident occurred in Prince Alfred Street this morning (Thursday 11 February).

Eyewitnesses said the accident happened around 8am.

The driver of the Mazda 323 behind it, Victoria Patrick and her colleague Ashleigh Mey, said the trailer rolled about 200 metres before hitting the car.

Driver of the bus, Richard Mathibela, said, "I looked in the mirrors and saw the trailer rolling down the street backwards and immediately stopped. There was a car that was coming behind us and the trailer hit that car and stopped.

"It was an unfortunate accident," he said.

The bus was passing the Africa Media Matrix building to drop off students at Kimberley Hall, one of the Rhodes University residences.

The bus was travelling from Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth.

Nobody was reported to be injured.
