Eastern Cape Department of Transport Chief Director Charles Reynolds yesterday Thursday 7 January said there were no major accidents around Grahamstown during the festive season.

Eastern Cape Department of Transport Chief Director Charles Reynolds yesterday Thursday 7 January said there were no major accidents around Grahamstown during the festive season.

Reynolds said the department was very pleased with the behaviour of drivers. However, he said there was high volume of traffic.

"Things went fairly well on the roads during the festive season in Grahamstown and its surroundings. There were only minor accidents. "It was very busy but the drivers were behaving well. "We want to compliment drivers, because as the department, we are very happy. There is nothing negative that I can report," said Reynolds.

During the festive season, officials stopped and checked 6 500 vehicles in the Sarah Baartman district during eight of the busiest travelling days.

From 27 December 2015 to 4 January, authorities issued 695 Section 56 notices, four Section 44 Notices and made two drunk driving arrests.

Section 56 notices are issued by traffic officers, usually for moving violations. Section 44 notices are orders for unroadworthy vehicles to be removed from the roads.
