Grahamstown played host to various provincial water polo games on Saturday – all of which were a warm up for the Old Mutual Wealth Schools’ Water Polo South Africa National Tournament takes place in Cape Town from 10 to 14 December.

Eastern Province, now known as Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics (NMBA), South Western Districts (SWD) and Border were represented by boys and girls team ranging from U13 to U19. Matches were played at St Andrew’s College and Kingswood College swimming pools as well as at the Diocesan School for Girls Aquatics Centre.

The EP sides, with a number of Grahamstown players in most of the teams, were dominant, winning all their games against SWD and managing only one defeat in seven matches against Border.

Pieter Serfontein, head of sport at Kingswood, as well as a NMB Aquatics committee member, said: The event/fixture continues to be a success and hugely invaluable in terms of preparation for the upcoming Inter-Provincial Tournament”.

Serfontein said the event “allows coaches the opportunity to experiment with positional combinations as well as with tactical plays in a setting very similar to that they will find themselves in at Nationals. It also brings to the fore which areas of play teams need to address or focus on in the next 10 days or so.

Dean Carelse, Eastern Province schools chairman said NMBA will be sending 16 (over 240 players and coaches) teams to the South African schools inter-provincial water polo tournament to be held in Cape Town from 10 to 14 December. The tournament will be hosted by Western Province Schools’ Water Polo at ten venues in and around the southern suburbs of Cape Town.

Look out for more details – including details of all the Grahamtown players – in Friday's newspaper.
