Two male relatives aged  32 and 34  will appear in the Paterson Magistrate's Court on charges of murder in two separate incidents.

A man, 34, who tried to hang himself was arrested on Saturday 28 November in connection with his girlfriend's death.

Grahamstown Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said on Friday 27 November, Paterson herders went out to the veld to graze their cattle when they discovered the fully clothed body of a local woman.

Residents said they had last seen her with her boyfriend two days previously and when the news of the discovery reached the town, they went to his home and set fire to it.

The 34-year-old man fled before they got there, Govender said.

He was arrested around midday Sunday at the home of a relative where he had tried to hang himself.

He is set to appear in the Paterson Magistrate's Court shortly.

In a separate incident, his 32-year-old relative is alleged to have assaulted his girlfriend on Thursday night.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said according to statements given to the police, the man and his girlfriend went to bed on Thursday night.

The following morning when she did not awaken, he summoned an ambulance. Ambulance personnel attended to the victim and certified her dead at the scene.

The SAPS were called and a murder docket was opened and the suspect was arrested.
