Eight Grahamstown schools received building material vouchers to the value of R15 000 each during the official opening of Cashbuild Hardware Store in lower Beaufort Street in Grahamstown yesterday (Thursday).

Eight Grahamstown schools received building material vouchers to the value of R15 000 each during the official opening of Cashbuild Hardware Store in lower Beaufort Street in Grahamstown yesterday (Thursday).

Learners from schools – including George Dickerson, Archie Mbolekwa, DD Siwisa, Tantyi and Samuel Ntlebi Primary Schools and Oatlands Preparatory School – had entered the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition in which schools from Grahamstown and surroundings were invited to submit artwork related to building materials.

The competition entries were displayed at the opening and some of them will decorate the Cashbuild store for the next five years according to management.

There was also live entertainment from the various participating schools, including singing, cultural dances and theatrical performances.

The eight school principals already have very clear ideas about what they’re going to spend their vouchers on.
George Dickerson’s principal, Melville Meiring said, “We need just basic maintenance around the school but the main thing is that our gutters have worn out so we will need to replace them”.

Ntaba Maria staff said their school was very old and that they wanted to give it a bit of a facelift – which included painting all the walls.

The principal of Oatlands Preparatory School, Rosaria De La Mare, said they were very happy to win.
“We are very grateful, every little bit helps. We are going to keep the voucher for basic maintenance that may arise in future,” she said.

Later in the day, the artwork was judged and gold, silver and bronze winners were chosen from each school. Here’s the full list of results.
