A man who died on the corner of Beaufort Street and Bathurst Street in Grahamstown in the early hours of Friday 13 November had appeared ill for some time, said an employee at the garage where he was found.

Police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender, said a security guard working in the area had discovered the man, who seemed unwell.

He went to the nearby Grahamstown Police Station to summon an ambulance. Govender said, “On arrival of the ambulance and while being treated, the victim started to shake, as though he was having a seizure”.

Ronnie Windvogel, who works at the garage, said they often arrived in the mornings to find the man sleeping in a corner.

He said when they arrived at work early on Friday morning, they found the police there, and the man lying on the ground.
“We know this man was very sick, though,” Windvogel said.

He said they knew him only as Fundile, and he was around 60 years old.

Govender said an inquest docket had been opened and that the cause of death would be determined only after a post mortem had been conducted.
