A shopkeeper who lost everything in looting on 21 and 22 October restocked his shop, only to lose everything again in a break-in last weekend.

The break-in, at a home-based shop in Extension 9, occurred on Sunday night. Tadas Kifili Bebwata this week told Grocott’s Mail how he had restocked his Extension 9 shop with the help of friends and family.

He said he had replaced five fridges – along with a significant amount of product – having repaired the windows and door broken in the looting last month.

On Sunday night, he said, thieves broke in and took everything. "Now I feel like all I have left is my life," he said. "I feel so hopeless." Police confirmed there had been a report of a burglary of a shop in Extension 9.

Grahamstown Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said she did not have details.

However, she could confirm that an Extension 9 man was asleep in his house and that during the course of the night, thieves had broken into the adjoining shop.

"The shop was cleaned out," Govender said.
