Brumbies Rugby Club successfully hosted Fabian Juries Community Fun Day last week Saturday. A decent number of spectators enjoyed some great 10-aside rugby action, as well as netball matches, at the Oval sports ground.

Judging by the level of competition, the event has the potential to become one of the biggest sporting tournaments in the Makana District.

A plan to expand it to include more teams as well as, possibly, soccer has also been mooted. Brumbies President, Giuliano Flotman, thanked all participating teams for their support and commitment.

He also apologised for a few minor incidents – where particularly enthusiastic spectators didn't agree with some of the rugby referees' decisions – that ran the risk of marring proceedings.

Although tempers flared, it was, at least, a mark of how seriously fans and players alike were taking the tournament. In the end it was the defending champions – Currie Park Rebels – who again emerged victorious after beating Ghost Town 5-0 in the final.

Currie Park were unbeaten after eight matches and walked away with winner’s medals and a trophy. The other teams taking part were Newtown, Verries, Cellotape, Fingo and Hooggenoeg.

There was a lively atmosphere throughout the day as the teams – mainly representing specific residential areas – and their supporters enjoyed themselves amongst the stalls and tents.

In this year’s competition both winning teams turned to be defending champions. Verries also defended their title in the Netball by beating Cellotape.
