Rhodes University has recently issued a statement saying that academic activities will also be suspended today and that the campus is closed.

    Here it is:

“The University has suspended the academic programme for Tuesday 20 October 2015 and we ask all students and staff to please honour the closure. Please refrain from attempting to move vehicles onto and off the campus. We request your patience and understanding during the closure.

We are aware that students may be feeling anxious with regards to lost class time. As the University took a decision to suspend the academic programme, students will not be disadvantaged by this decision. Students will be supported in making up missed work or assessment will be modified, while ensuring it is still rigorous. More information will be communicated by academic departments when academic activities resume.

The University will remain closed tomorrow, Wednesday 21 October 2015. The University will be in solidarity with the Higher Education sector as students and staff embark nationwide on protest action against the shortage of funding in Higher Education.

We call on all members of the University Community to respect each other. We acknowledge the right to protest and the right to go about personal business. Any incidents of concern can be reported to Nomangwane Mretyana, the Harassment Officer at n.mretyana@ru.ac.za.”
