After a nail-biting two wicket victory over the Momentum One Day Cup champions, The Unlimited Titans in Centurion on Friday 9 October, the Warriors will host the Sunfoil Dolphins at St Georges Park on Wednesday (14 October) afternoon hoping to record their second win of the competition.

The Warriors successfully chased down the Unlimited Titans target of 327 for 4 with just one ball to spare, thanks largely to stand-in captain on the day Jon-Jon Smuts’ fifth List-A career century (101 off 74 balls), and a useful contribution from Mohammed Yaseen Vallie (52 off 82 balls) the pair recorded a partnership of 133 off 126 deliveries which laid a solid platform. But the partnership that took the game away from the Unlimited Titans was a superb 89 off 50 deliveries for the seventh wicket between Simon Harmer and Andrew Birch. Harmer scored a quick-fire 42 off 35 before being dismissed by The Unlimited Titans seamer Junior Dala, while Andrew Birch finished unbeaten on 55 off 28 deliveries. Basheer Walters hit the winning runs to seal the victory for the Warriors.

Warriors coach Malibongwe Maketa was more than pleased about the team’s opening performance against the defending champions away from home, but has stressed for the need to improve with each game. “Going to Pretoria and playing cricket there is a tough challenge, and the match going down to the last over is proof of that, we played well but there is room for improvement in areas of our game.”

Looking forward to the second game against the Sunfoil Dolphins at St Georges Park, Maketa also gave comment on the prospect that the Sunfoil Dolphins will bring to Port Elizabeth on Wednesday.

“They are a quality side, and they have been playing good cricket which has seen them win a few trophies recently. Our skill execution will have to be very good on Wednesday.”

The gates for Wednesday’s game open at 1pm, and tickets are available from the St Georges Park ticket office, R40 for adults and R20 for scholars. The competition sponsors Momentum together with Cricket South Africa are running a unique schools initiative that is aimed at giving back to schools or clubs, and you can get involved by simply buying your ticket through www.ticketpros.co.za and follow the steps on the website.
