Last Friday saw lots of excitement at Fikizolo Primary School. In May, the school's dance group came third in a district dance competition in East London and, on Friday, Ntomboxolo Ntanga from Department of Education from the District Office brought the trophy to the school and presented it to the successful performers.

Plus, on the same day, the school was given a set of marimbas from the Access Music Project, the Grahamstown-based organisation that provides music teaching in under-resourced schools.

AMP Director, Gareth Walwyn, encouraged leaners to start learning to play marimbas as early as possible so that, when they get to high school, they'll be ready to join the marimba band and make music straight away.

Staff at the school were also delighted with the instruments and felt that the children would get a lot out of learning to play.

"On behalf of the staff, the learners and the parents of Fikizolo Primary School I would like to thank the AMP! staff for choosing Fikizolo to be among the group of schools receiving marimba band [teaching]in Grahamstown.

Marimbas, I believe, will give an opportunity to the young musicians and this will be the platform for the learners to flaunt their skills," said Fikizolo Principal, Zoleka Kate.

"To the two teachers who committed themselves in the training for the whole year, Mrs Thandeka Budaza and Mrs Nkoli Makubalo, the school is very proud of you."
